Seattle activist, attorney Nikkita Oliver launches bid for City Council seat

Seattle activist, attorney and spoken word poet Nikkita Oliver launched their bid for City Council on Wednesday, ending months of speculation from supporters that they would run for elected office again in 2021.

In a campaign announcement on Twitter, Oliver stated their intention to run for Council Position 9 which will be vacated by current Council President Lorena Gonzalez who is running for mayor.

Oliver ran for mayor in 2017 and narrowly missed snagging a place on the ballot for the Seattle Peoples Party, finishing third overall behind current mayor Jenny Durkan — who will not be seeking reelection — and urban planner Cary Moon.

Despite the loss, Oliver remained active with social justice groups in Seattle, building a strong base of support with young progressives. They have been a supporter of defunding the Seattle Police Department (SPD) and reinvesting in community and opposed plans to build a new youth jail in King County.
