One year after start of pandemic, demand for office space in downtown Seattle begins to rebound
It's been over a year since the COVID-19 pandemic emptied office buildings in downtown Seattle, sending many workers in a "new normal" of remote work.
But a newly published report found that demand for office space in the Emerald City is growing, placing it "within an arms length of pre-crisis levels."
The VTS Office Demand Index found office leasing demand in Seattle is down 24% from the pre-crisis levels one year ago, with strong gains being made in January and February as vaccinations efforts ramp up and more people become eligible to get the shot.
Nationwide, the report found that office demand nationwide plummeted over 85% between February and May 2020 as stay-at-home orders were enacted. But now, demand is only down by roughly a third, and showing signs of recovery in many metropolitan areas.
