Washington collected $469M from pot sales in 2020. Here's how it ranks nationwide.
Washington state ranked No. 2 in cannabis sales among states with legal recreational use laws. In all, Washington brought in $469 million in tax revenue from cannabis sales in 2020, which made up 1.7% of the states 2020 revenue, according to a study by US Drug Test Centers, a Las Vegas-based drug testing company.
California ranked No. 1, with more than $1 billion in tax revenue from pot sales in 2020, making up 0.6% of its total revenue that year. Colorado ranked No. 3 in the list, with $387 million in sales tax collected in 2020. Oregon, Illinois and Nevada followed, all collecting more than $100 million in sales tax.
In all, cannabis taxes contributed nearly $2.5 billion to state budgets in 2020, the study said.
Washington, along with Colorado, in 2012 were the first states to legalize recreational cannabis, though retail sales didn't begin in either state until 2014. Sixteen states and Washington, D.C., now allow recreational cannabis use, with New York being the most recent addition, in 2021. A 17th state, Virginia, will join the group on July 1.
