Fences removed from Capitol Campus in Olympia after 4 months

The fences put up restricting access to parts of Olympia’s Capitol Campus were taken down Tuesday morning after four months, the Department of Enterprise Services announced.

Removal began 8 a.m. Tuesday.

The fences were put up as part of security measures in the wake of the Jan. 6 riot in D.C. and protests in Olympia.

“I’m pleased to announce that we’re removing the temporary construction fencing on West Campus. It was an important measure to protect free speech rights, the democratic process and government operations. We are hopeful that political temperatures will continue to cool and that threat levels or illegal activity will not necessitate such security measures again,” DES Director Chris Liu said.
