Washington's scenic North Cascades Highway reopens today

Washington's North Cascades Highway will officially reopen to drivers in May, giving broader access to the national park known as the "American Alps" for those looking to make day trips or do some hiking.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) announced over social media that the freshly plowed highway would reopen on Wednesday, May 5 with the gates east of Newhalem and west of Mazama opening promptly at 1 p.m.

The department noted that it took crews four weeks to clear the road which closes every winter due to heavy snowfall and avalanche dangers. Avalanches usually occur in November and December, and the highway officially closed for the season on Nov. 13, 2020.

Due to COVID-19 concerns, there will be no ceremony to commemorate the annual opening of the gates, and WSDOT is reminding people who visit to social distance.
