New covered performance pavilion, play area open in Seattle's Occidental Square

A new pavilion was unveiled at Occidental Park on Wednesday in Seattle’s Pioneer Square neighborhood. The structure, which measures 90 feet wide and 30 feet deep, can serve many purposes: an outdoor classroom, a performance venue, a covered dining area, or a general use space for the public. The roof of the pavilion is made of glass, while the rest of the structure is made of timber.

The designer of the project, Tom Kundig of Olson Kundig, says the materials used to construct the new pavilion call to the history of Pioneer Square.

“The history of Pioneer Square is long and complex, from the First Nations who originally settled here to the timber industry that later shaped the region. The pavilion draws on those influences and introduces a new amenity and place of shelter for every visitor of the park."

Funding for the project came entirely from private donors, including donors to the Seattle Parks Foundation in partnership with the Alliance for Pioneer Square, Seattle Parks and Recreation, and the Downtown Seattle Association.
