King County reaches 70% vaccinated, will drop mask mandate in 2 weeks
King County will drop its mask mandate on June 29, Public Health Seattle & King County announced Tuesday.
The county said 70% of residents age 16 and older had completed their vaccination series as of Tuesday. In two weeks, they'll be considered fully vaccinated.
Dr. Jeff Duchin, King County public health officer, issued the latest directive in May urging everyone, vaccinated or not, to wear masks until the county had reached the 70% milestone. This came after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced those who were fully vaccinated no longer needed to wear masks. State guidance still says people should wear masks in indoor, crowded areas like schools or health care facilities.
"Our vaccines are extremely effective protection against getting sick, being hospitalized and death from Covid-19," Duchin said in a statement. "Ninety-seven percent of recent Covid-19 cases have occurred among people who are not fully vaccinated."
