Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo opens annual 'zoo doo' compost lottery
There's another high-profile lottery going on in Seattle, but this one isn't about cashing in for a COVID-19 vaccine.
Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo opened up its annual Fecal Fest compost program for the summer, giving gardening enthusiasts in the region a chance to get their hands on some sought-after "zoo doo" the most exotic compost in the Pacific Northwest.
Zoo Doo is feces produced by the zoo's non-primate herbivores including tapirs, mountain goats, rhinos, hippos, giraffes and zebras. The highly-fertile matter enhances a soil's water and nutrient retention, improving soil texture. The doo is a completely organic soil amendment, and works best with vegetables and annuals, according to Woodland Park.
This is the first time that the program has been held in the summer, thanks in large part to an overhaul of the zoo's compost system two years ago. Residents must enter the zoo's lottery system by July 9 for a chance to purchase some of the compost, with amounts starting at 10 gallons to a maximum of 100 gallons or by the truckload. The compost is limited to one full truckload per person.
