County moves Kitsap Rescue Mission shelter to Quality Inn, citing lack of space at Midway Inn

BREMERTON — Kitsap County has backed out of a plan to move the Kitsap Rescue Mission’s overnight homeless shelter to Bremerton’s Midway Inn, instead signing a lease with the Quality Inn on Kitsap Way to house more than 70 people experiencing homelessness until a permanent shelter in Port Orchard is ready to open.

County officials said they withdrew from the lease with the Midway Inn because they didn’t believe they would have enough rooms to house all of Kitsap Rescue Mission’s clients.

Earlier this week, dozens of long-term residents at the Midway Inn raised concerns about being displaced by the shelter’s move. During discussions among the county, Kitsap Community Resources, Kitsap Rescue Mission, the nonprofit Surviving Change, and the hotel, it became clear there were “more people staying at the hotel than we were led to believe,” Kitsap County Human Services Director Doug Washburn said.

“We didn’t realize anyone would be displaced by this,” Washburn said.

Curious because it was one of the various transcriptions of the Chinese trade language word which became 'ketchup'.

Origin of the Words Ketchup and Catsup

Both words are derived from the Chinese ke-tsiap, a pickled fish sauce. It made its way to Malaysia where it became kechap and ketjap in Indonesia. Catsup and katchup are acceptable spellings used interchangeably with ketchup, however, ketchup is the way it is popularly used today. "Catsup", which dates to the same time, may well be a different Romanization of the same word, trying to come closer to a sound that doesn't really exist in English.
