Remaining Boeing 747 production hits single digits

One of the most iconic jets in aviation history is nearing the planned end of its production run.

The backlog of the Boeing Co.’s 747 has dropped to nine aircraft following the delivery last month of one of the aircraft to UPS.

Boeing’s latest unfilled orders report shows five remaining 747s will go to UPS.

The other four will be delivered to Atlas Air, which placed the final 747 order in January. The Atlas airplanes will be the last jumbos to roll off the line at Boeing's Everett manufacturing facility.

The manufacturer at this point only builds the 747 as a cargo aircraft, but one previously built passenger variant remains on its books. According to a report from Simply Flying, it was built for Lufthansa, but the carrier never took delivery of the aircraft.

How does that happen? Did they have to pay a restocking fee?

I just learned that one of the reasons supply routes were disrupted during the pandemic was because they have increased cargo space on many passenger planes and since passenger planes were barely flying, the cargo had nowhere else to go. All other cargo planes were fully booked with their regular cargo deliveries.
