'Revive I-5' returns: Southbound Interstate 5 to undergo lane reductions in Seattle next weekend
Seattle drivers should prepare for delays on the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 near downtown next weekend as the "Revive I-5" project returns.
Starting at 8 p.m. on Sept. 10, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will close the mainline of southbound lanes south of Freeway Park. During the closure, traffic will use the collector/distributor lanes as crews work to replace four halves of worn-out expansion joints. The lanes will reopen at 5 a.m. on Sept. 13 for normal traffic flow.
The first phase of the $25.7 million rehabilitation project began in late May with removing a thin layer of concrete from a 1.25-mile stretch of freeway. Now, in the second phase, crews will be repaving the section and replacing approximately 40 expansion joints between Interstate 90 and Spokane Street.
It is the first major repair work done on the section in more than 55 years. Similar work was completed on the northbound lanes of the aging freeway in 2019.
