COVID-19 is raging in Pierce County. Is it time for vaccination rules of some kind?

Sep. 4—The Aug. 25 COVID-19 vaccination clinic on the University of Washington Tacoma campus vibed like a late summer street fair: free food, a danceable soundtrack, giveaways.

It lacked only one thing: people.

Passersby who happened upon the clinic quickened their pace as they declined offers of chimichangas and home coronavirus testing kits being given away with a jab in the arm.

By the time the MultiCare nurses and organizing staff from the Pierce County AIDS Foundation packed up their needles and vials, they had given a total of four vaccinations over six hours.

The turnout was nothing new to MultiCare nurse Sheri Mitchell. Chairs are more often empty than occupied lately at the clinics she runs all over Pierce County.

"We've really seen the numbers just die," Mitchell said.

That low vaccine uptake is coming at a high price in the county.

As the Delta variant sends cases skyrocketing throughout the state, Pierce County has been particularly overwhelmed. Tents sit outside MultiCare's Tacoma General Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup in an attempt to make more room for the influx of patients.

Numbers from VAERS do not justify the fear of vaccine.

had demonstrations by unmasked people objecting to the new restriction that required proof of vaccination to go into restaurants and bars. The mayor of Sequim, a Qanon person, is drafting a resolution against the county health officer because of this.

There are no hospital beds in Port Angeles or Port Townsend and the other hospitals are so full they cannot take our patients. The unvaccinated are getting care but god forbid a person is in an accident or has a heart attack here. It seems we are without hospital care except for the unvaccinated. I am furious.

Masks are required for entry (and supplied if you don't have one), and also throughout the Fair, indoors and outdoors, in all areas and venues. We saw very lax enforcement and little to no reminders posted or announced in arenas, etc. There were 2 Alcohol Enforcemnt officers reminding some people walking between 2 of the buildings, but there were no PA announcements that we heard, nor any additional signs reminding people that masks were required.

Early in the day I'm guessing mask usage was at above 90% where we were (mostly in the Ag/Floral building). Later when we got lunch and went to an arena show (draft horse demonstrations) we changed our seats after 8 people sat in the 2 rows just in front of us, maskless. It appeared that about 20-25% of those in the stands were not masked.

I mentioned it to the person at the gate when we left.

I am contacting the Pierce County Health Department to clue them in to what's happening. They can ask the Fair to add reminders or go as far as shutting them down if compliance is too low.
