Renton-based debt collector to pay more than $1.6M for deceptive letters

SEATTLE – A Renton-based debt collector has agreed to pay more than $1.6 million for sending deceptive letters to Washingtonians.

Attorney General Bob Ferguson’s office announced early Wednesday the Convergent agency will pay back its victims.

The agency sent out letters called “settlement offers” to settle debts, which included student loans. However, it did not disclose it would not enforce the debt in court, leading some to believe there could be litigation to collect said debts.

The AG's office says about 1,400 people who sent money to convergent will get that money back, plus interest.
