Washington man convicted of killing trans teen sentenced to nearly 20 years

The man convicted of killing a transgender teen in southwestern Washington in 2019 was sentenced Thursday to 19.5 years behind bars.

Late last month, 27-year-old David Bogdanov, of Vancouver, Wash., was found guilty of second-degree murder and malicious harassment, which is considered a hate-crime offense under state law.

He was accused of killing Nikki Kuhnhausen, who was 17 when she went missing on June 6, 2019.

Prosecutors said that Bogdanov murdered the victim — by strangling her with a phone charger cord — after she revealed to him that she was transgender during a sexual encounter in his van.

Kuhnhausen’s body was only discovered six months later when a passerby picking beargrass on the hills around Larch Mountain in eastern Clark County found a human skull in the woods and notified authorities. Bogdanov was arrested days later, on Dec. 25.
