Amazon to provide employees paid tuition, skills training in bid to fill front-line positions
Amazon.com Inc. released a survey with Gallup that said 31% of Washington workers would leave their job for one with upskilling opportunities, and Amazon is looking to use that to its advantage for hiring in its fulfillment centers and for other front-line positions.
The Seattle-based online retail giant announced last week it would offer upfront college tuition for operations employees as part of an expansion the company's 2-year-old Upskilling 2025 program to train 100,000 U.S. workers by 2025 to help them transition into in-demand, higher-paying jobs.
Now the company says it will commit more than $1.2 billion to train 300,000 workers, more than 30% of Amazon's U.S. workforce.
As part of its commitment, Amazon said it will also add three more employee training programs, including for data center technology, IT and user experience design, and cover the costs for workers receiving high school diplomas and GEDs.
