New 18,000-square-foot skate plaza unveiled at Seattle Center

The Seattle Center announced last week the opening of its new, multi-story skateboarding experience dubbed the Seattle Center Skate Plaza.

The 18,000-square-foot skatepark, located between 5th Avenue North and Taylor Avenue on Thomas Street, replaces the Seattle Center Skatepark which closed in 2018.

The Seattle Center Skate Plaza was constructed by Grindline Skateparks and encompasses a public alleyway with skating areas on each side, connected with a sidewalk. The area also features a glass art installation by artist Perri Howard, which includes a glass wallride. The installation was originally created for the 2009 skatepark.

“Skate parks at Seattle Center have provided young people with an enthusiasm for boarding the opportunity to build and hone their skills, where they can enjoy healthy social engagement and enliven a portion of the streetscape,” said Seattle Center Director Robert Nellams in a news release. “I want to thank and commend our skateboarding partners for their patience and perseverance over the years and thank Oak View Group for their financial contribution.”
