3rd Asian Giant Hornet Nest To Be Destroyed Next Week

BLAINE, WA — The Washington State Department of Agriculture will be destroying its third Asian giant hornet nest of 2021 before the end of next week.

The WSDA first reported the third nest's existence back on Saturday, Sept. 11, the same day crews destroyed the second nest.

The first nest of 2021 was found back in August, and eradicated near the end of the month. All three nests were located in rural Whatcom County, just outside of Blaine, Washington.

While the first two nests went down without much of a fight, the third may prove more challenging: unlike other nests, the third nest is embedded high in a tree, about 22 feet off the ground. The WSDA says their crews are moving in specialized equipment to help them reach the hornet's home base, and hope to have it in place and the nest eradicated sometime late next week.

That thing doesn't even look real. Wasp bite. They don't sting.

I had to go to 6th grade camp for a week in Sept 1997 and before the students arrived they killed the wasps' nests that were all over the field where the kids would be. About 1 hour after we arrived a bunch of students started screaming...their soccer ball had rolled onto the field in the area not covered by the wasp patrol and hit a nest. They swarmed and followed the kids up to the nurse's cabin where the door was locked and we were all attacked while trying to get inside. A wasp flew past me, didn't even land, but managed to take a chunk of my arm with him. One boy wad being bitten all over his head and face. He had a terrible reaction and had to go home. That is when I found out I am allergic to wasps as my arm swelled up. Benadryl barely helped.

That was the beginning of a very long, unpleasant 5 days.
