Gonzlez to Pioneer Square businesses: I hear your frustrations over homelessness
Seattle mayoral candidate M. Lorena González laid out her plans to address homelessness during a Tuesday virtual meeting with members of the Pioneer Square community, pledging to site shelters and other social services in other parts of the city.
The neighborhood is struggling, as evidenced by an unsanctioned encampment at Pioneer Park, where trash cans overflow under the landmark pergola as people from out of town meet up for tours of the historic district.
"I do want to acknowledge that I hear from many members of our small business community that the impact of people experiencing homelessness and mental health crises is real," said González, City Council president who is running against Bruce Harrell, a four-term council member who did not seek re-election two years ago.
González also addressed policing in Seattle, where more than 300 officers resigned over the last year and half. Last year, police Chief Carmen Best resigned after González and other councilmembers cut the budget of the Seattle Police Department, which had about 1,400 officers at the time.
