The shortlist of names for Washington’s new hybrid electric ferry is out.

Of the hundreds of proposed monikers sent to the state’s Transportation Commission, here are the finalists: “Wishkah,” “Stillaguamish,” “Snoqualmie,” “Enie Marie,” “Stehekin” and “Muckleshoot.”

The seven-person commission will decide by Dec. 14 which name will adorn the newest ferry in the state’s 21-boat fleet, which hasn’t seen an addition since 2016. The new ferry, which runs mostly on electricity, will have room for 144 cars and 1,500 passengers. It’s slated to set sail in 2025.

The commission said only 19 of the more than 900 name submissions it received from the public met its naming criteria. The six finalists were chosen from those 19 names. The commission asked those submitting names to pick one that had broad familiarity, was non-offensive and carried statewide or regional significance.
