City launches 16M Seattle Relief Fund: Who qualifies, and how to apply
Seattle residents have until next month to apply for one-time cash payments from the Seattle Relief Fund, a pool of $16 million the city is earmarking for low-income residents impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.
Qualifying adults will receive a one-time payment of an amount between $1,000 and $3,000, depending on the size of their household. Every Seattle resident is eligible, regardless of their citizenship or immigration status. Applications are due Nov. 15.
The relief funds are coming from one pot of money included in the Seattle Rescue Plan, a massive $128 million spending package the Seattle City Council passed in June. Funded primarily by federal dollars, the plan included $25 million for direct cash assistance. The $16 million in relief funds will be subtracted from that $25 million figure.
As the first U.S. city to be significantly impacted by COVID-19, Seattle has been a leader to rise to address both the public health and economic challenges of this pandemic, Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan said in a statement. Because of our federal funds, we can continue to help vulnerable residents, especially immigrants and BIPOC families who continue to be disproportionately impacted by this ongoing pandemic.
