Seattle's South Lake Union among the top 20 US neighborhoods in apartment growth

Seattle’s South Lake Union neighborhood was among the top 20 neighborhoods in the U.S. that saw the most apartments built during the last five years, according to a new report from RentCafe.

The report examined construction data in the nation’s 50 largest cities to determine which neighborhoods saw the most apartments added between 2017 and now. South Lake Union landed at number 15 on a list of 20 neighborhoods.

The home of Seattle’s thriving tech scene, South Lake Union saw 2,979 apartments built over the last five years. That accounts for 12% of the city’s new units, the highest percentage among any other neighborhood in the city. The next closest was Belltown — 10% — where 2,639 apartments have been built since 2017.

It’s worth mentioning that Yesler Terrace saw 1,717 apartments built over that same time period. Those units account for 7% of Seattle’s new rental stock.
