Seattle removes a second Pioneer Square homeless encampment

Most people living at a homeless encampment around the Pioneer Square pergola have been referred to and accepted temporary shelter in hotel rooms or shelters, city of Seattle officials said Tuesday.

Parks and Recreation has temporarily closed the site to clean and restore the public space, including cleaning and repairing benches, power washing pavers, repairing trip hazards and conducting rodent control.

The number of people surviving on the streets in the historic neighborhood shot up after shelters closed in an effort to reduce the spread of Covid-19.

The encampment has been a source of frustration for neighborhood business owners and operators like Marc Ank, operations manager at Bill Speidel's Underground Tour, the popular 56-year-old business.
