Light rail passengers walk in tunnel after train stops
Sound Transit is investigating a Link light rail operational incident that forced the transit authority to suspend service in both directions after the Apple Cup game on Friday evening.
At approximately 8:25 p.m., a Link light rail train became disabled in the northbound tunnel between the University of Washington and U District Stations. The electronic cable linking the first car and the trailing three cars severed, causing the train to come to an immediate stop.
The severed cable prevented the train operator from communicating with the passengers by intercom. After the passengers decided to use emergency exits to leave the train, Sound Transit followed its safety procedures by suspending service in both tunnels until these passengers could be removed safely via a rescue train.
Daniel Heppner shared videos and photos with KIRO 7 showing his fellow passengers walking in the tunnel to get out after their train stopped.
