December arrives with much cooler air spilling into Washington state
SEATTLE - The first day of December went down as being the warmest on record across the Columbia Basin.
Omak and Wenatchee hit a balmy 74F & 70F, respectively, setting all-time December high-temperature records on Tuesday. It turns out the warm weather was just a fluke as some of these same areas will see snowflakes fly by Friday night.
Noticeably colder air is spilling into Washington State behind a departing front today. Morning showers over Puget Sound taper as temperatures take a gradual tumble into the 30's tonight and levels along the Nooksack and Skagit River are finally returning to normal with dry conditions into Friday.
The cold air ensures that the next storm produces snow instead of warm rain in the mountains, thus shutting down any further risk of lowland flooding. Wet snowflakes are even possible down to the Whatcom and Skagit County foothills Saturday morning. But any accumulation will stay confined to elevations above 1,500 FT with 3-6 inches at the Cascade passes.
