Low Income Housing Institute opens temporary shelter in former Comfort Inn

A former Comfort Inn at 8620 Hosmer St. in Tacoma opens Wednesday as a homeless shelter serving up to 120 people.

The shelter, now called Aspen Court, was purchased by the Seattle-based Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI) for $8.8 million in October as part of a multi-jurisdictional effort. The acquisition was funded by Pierce County and the cities of Tacoma and Lakewood. Twelve of the spaces will be reserved for residents from Lakewood.

“This is the first of its kind in Pierce County,” Heather Moss, director of human services for Pierce County, recently told the Business Journal. “We’ve never had a hotel shelter. It’s also unique because it’s a true partnership between two cities and the county. We are all recognizing that homelessness is a regional issue.”

Each unit of the 94 units has a refrigerator, microwave, TV, Wi-Fi, private bathroom and air conditioning. The three-story, 54,000-square-foot building was constructed in 2000.

In 2020, 10,585 individuals experienced homelessness in Pierce County. A 2020 point-in-time count recorded 1,897 homeless individuals, with 544 from Tacoma, according to data provided by LIHI.
