UW Medicine postpones non-urgent surgeries, procedures amid coronavirus surge
SEATTLE - UW Medicine says it is postponing non-urgent surgeries and procedures scheduled through Jan. 14 to help maintain staffing and bed capacity as the number of coronavirus cases continues to rise in the community.
The hospital says they will only reschedule surgeries and procedures that can be safely done at a later date.
On Thursday, UW Medicine announced that it would no longer offer coronavirus tests to people who are getting tested for travel or for a gathering and have no symptoms. Only symptomatic individuals and those with known exposures will be able to get a test.
The high positivity rate measuring more than 40% at some South King County testing sites is creating a challenge in UW Medicine's testing process and slowing scientists' ability to parse out which samples are actually positive, said Dr. Geoff Baird, chair of laboratory medicine and pathology at UW Medicine.
