5G-related airline cancellations arrive at Paine Field

EVERETT — Alaska Airlines canceled nearly two dozen flights in and out of Paine Field on Monday due to the rollout of 5G cellular technology near the airport.

The cancellations are the combined result of last week’s 5G activation, poor weather conditions and the type of aircraft that Alaska operates at the Snohomish County-owned airport.

“Alaska has canceled 23 flights on Monday related to the activation of 5G C-Band service. They are all flights into and out of Paine Field,” spokesman Ray Lane said in an email to The Daily Herald.

Embraer 175 jets, which Alaska Air Group subsidiary Horizon Air operates at Paine Field, have not been cleared by the Federal Aviation Administration to land in low visibility or other poor weather near 5G towers. As a result, the Seattle-based carrier was forced to cancel Paine Field flights.

known about for literally Tens of Years), that this is causing so much grief for the airline industry. Did they not take advantage of the usual long lead times to change over their technology in preparation for the upcoming 5G changes?

Speaking of 5G, I finally saw one 5G tower installed in the Soulard area in STLMO, it really looked like the Monolith in the movie 2001, A Space Odyssey. It was really neat to see, but I was surprised that it was actually mounted on the sidewalk outside a local bar. I figured that they would have these towers on rooftops, etc.

Not sure about this being planned that long now. There have been a lot of services being moved around in the FCC licensed spectrum including broadcast television. 5G leverages the cleared spectrum with some big, wide channels to support fat and fast packet transmissions. But yes it is surprising that the FAA has been slow on this issue, probably too busy allowing people to use their cellphones while airborne.
We had one of the new (ugly) 5G sites installed on a pole across the street from our house. Gotta say the VZ cells are uglier than the T cells. T has used decorative, metal poles while VZ is using old creosote wood poles. Why pay rent for a rooftop when a pole can be had?
