Bill proposes alert system for missing Indigenous people

Washington is one step closer to being the first state in the U.S. to create an alert system to help locate missing Indigenous people, particularly women.

The bill unanimously passed in the House this week and now heads to the Senate.

The proposed system would be similar to the state’s Silver Alerts, which are for endangered missing persons aged 60 years and older.

Information about missing Indigenous people would be put on message signs, highway advisories and in news releases.
