A King County Superior Court commissioner is expected to limit some picket line activities by striking Teamsters who drive ready-mix concrete trucks.
In a Wednesday complaint for injunctive relief, attorneys for six concrete companies said union members have blocked vehicles entering and leaving the companies' sand-and-gravel plants, forcing them to wait over train tracks at some facilities. At a Redmond plant, the attorneys said, ready-mix trucks and personal vehicles were trapped for around seven hours, with the union the next day causing "a vehicular collision between a third-party individual and a member of the public driving on 188th Avenue."
The complaint also alleged that on Feb. 4 at a Seattle plant picketers "assaulted, intimidated, threatened and directed racial slurs to the driver of a vehicle" operated by a customer of concrete supplier CalPortland. "One of the union picketers used a baseball bat with a picket sign attached to assault the driver and damage the vehicle," the complaint states.
A union spokeswoman said none of its members called the driver a racial slur "and never would." She added the driver waved a bat at Teamsters who tried "to calm him down."

(11,932 posts)SEATTLE - Concrete workers in western Washington are still on strike which means there will now be a delay on the reopening of the West Seattle Bridge.
A resolution needed to happen on Feb. 20, according to Seattle Mayor, Bruce Harrell, in order to avoid delays for the bridge.
If the strike doesn't end, Harrell said there could be significant delays.
According to Jamie Fleming with the Teamsters Local No. 174, no resolution has been reached.
"It's tragic how many people are being hurt," said Fleming.
Fleming says the strike has been going on for three months. "This is long for any strike," she said.
With this work stoppage involving concrete workers in our region, large and small projects that need concrete are caught in the crossfire.

(11,932 posts)Picket lines on major construction sites around the Puget Sound region have been in effect since November 2021. Thousand of construction workers have been laid off as a result, and more will likely follow as negotiations with concrete suppliers remain at a standstill.
Jaime Fleming, a spokesperson with Teamsters 174, representing 330 workers employed by various local concrete suppliers, confirmed with MyNorthwest that employers are still stonewalling and refusing any contact or conversation with us.
