Washington lawmakers near passage of bill requiring employers to disclose pay to job applicants

A bill in the Washington state Legislature that would require employers to disclose salary ranges to job applicants has passed both chambers this week.

More companies are already disclosing starting salaries or salary ranges in their job descriptions. In Washington state, the share of employers that have done so grew from 16% to 30% between 2019 and 2021, according to analysis from Textio, a Seattle-based augmented writing company that focuses on recruiting content.

Senate Bill 5761 would make any employer with 15 or more employees disclose pay and benefits information to job applicants. It would also require employers to reveal that information to internal transfers and promotions.

The bill, introduced by state Sen. Emily Randall, D-Port Orchard, amends a previous Washington state law requiring employers to disclose the information only if applicants first ask for it.
