Inslee signs bill to improve reform laws some police agencies said hindered enforcement

improvements to police reform laws passed last year after hearing repeatedly from law enforcement agencies about what they said was confusion over what officers could and could not do in the wake of their passage.

When major police reforms were passed last year some police departments all of a sudden weren’t showing up to calls for help in situations where people who suffering from a mental health crisis, saying the new laws prevented them from being there to use physical force.

“We did the right thing last year by taking important steps to pass police reform legislation," Inslee said. "However, we have experienced cases since then where police weren’t sure how they could help or whether they could help a person in crisis.”

“Some of the people that go out to assist people in crisis, they want police officers there," said Monica Alexander, who works with the Criminal Justice Training Commission Police Academy. "Police were afraid to be there because of the way the bills were worded.”
