Allen Foundation-funded housing project opens in Seattle
Nearly 100 King County families either living in shelters or on the verge of doing so now have a home in a new Seattle building that the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation funded.
Gardner House and the Allen Family Center officially opened this week near the Mount Baker light rail station. The 95-unit building offers permanent supportive housing services like employment assistance and child care. Monthly rents range from $50 to $1,400.
The foundation provided $30 million for the project along with $5 million from the city Office of Housing and $10.7 million through a tax credit. Nonprofit Mercy Housing Northwest owns and operates the mid-rise project that is named for the late Paul Allen and foundation Chairwoman Jody Allen's mother, Faye Gardner Allen, a former Seattle schoolteacher who championed public libraries.
Nearly 2,500 families with children were counted living in shelters or on the streets of King County in early 2019. Transit-oriented development (TOD) projects help by providing relatively quick and easy access to jobs and schools, and there are more and more opportunities with the region spending billions of dollars to build out the rail system.
