Biden's massive spending bill includes funding for affordable housing projects
President Joe Biden signed a $1.5 trillion federal omnibus spending package on Tuesday that will provide millions of dollars in financial assistance for affordable housing projects around Puget Sound.
In Tacoma, two Hilltop developments are set to receive a total of $4.5 million. A 300-unit project under development by Forterra on the former Rite Aid site at the corner of 11th Avenue South and Martin Luther King Jr. Way, will receive $1.5 million. Nearby, Tacoma Housing Authority's $94 million development at 1120 S. 11th St. will get $3 million.
Rep. Derek Kilmer, D-Gig Harbor, led the effort to secure the federal funding.
Our region had challenges with affordable housing and homelessness before the Covid-19 pandemic, Kilmer said in a news release. We cant afford to leave anybody behind and its important that the federal government remains a strong partner as we work to address those challenges.
