Update: Teamsters balk at concrete companies' return-to-work offer
Four concrete companies have made an offer to get all striking concrete-delivery truck drivers back to work by April 1 at the latest, but the head of Teamsters Local 174 rejected it, saying in a statement the offer is a request to end the strike.
Glacier Northwest, Stoneway Concrete, Salmon Bay Sand & Gravel, and Cadman on Friday announced the proposal to pay the cost of medical insurance for coverage in April if the strikers return to work for a minimum of 60 calendar days as negotiations continue.
Striking employees would not otherwise be eligible for medical coverage in April since they did not work the required minimum hours in March.
"Our members went on strike and put everything on the line because they were out of options," Local 174 Secretary-Treasurer Rick Hicks said, adding the union has made "offer after offer to these rich construction companies ... The companies have rejected every good faith offer that would guarantee resolution to outstanding issues, and have only responded with rhetoric and not once a meaningful proposal."
