Details of $67M shelter plan on large development site in Sodo emerge
King County Executive Dow Constantine on Wednesday announced a plan to expand round-the-clock shelter and behavioral health services at a Sodo "hub."
The $66.5 million project is the next phase of a plan the county launched last year to offer shelter and housing to 500 people currently experiencing homelessness in downtown Seattle, Sodo and nearby unincorporated areas. Funding for both phases is primarily from the American Rescue Plan Act.
The cost of two five-year ground leases for the nearly 6.9-acre property, which Seattle-based Urban Visions owns, will be $54.3 million, according to the county. The County Council must approve the deals.
Urban Visions CEO Greg Smith declined to comment Thursday. Earlier, he said the lease deals would need to work for the county and make it reasonable for him to hold off developing the site, which straddles Sixth Avenue South at the western terminus of Interstate 90. The developer has secured permits to build a five-tower mixed-use office campus called S.
