Suppliers say 30 people held 'against their will' for hours at Seattle concrete plant
Just after noon on Friday, around 100 striking ready-mix truck drivers held roughly 30 people "against their will for over four hours" at the Stoneway Concrete plant in South Seattle, a spokesperson for the sand-and-gravel companies said.
"The picketers, along with local and International Teamster leadership, blocked all exits at the facility," the companies said in a Friday evening statement. The statement added that over 25 calls were made to the Seattle Police Department but officers did not arrive until 4 p.m., and that "it took until 5:15 p.m. for everyone to be safely released from the facility."
Seattle police Sgt. Randy Huserik on Monday noted this is an ongoing labor dispute and, "barring actions that put people's safety in jeopardy, the Seattle Police Department will not intervene in these on going demonstrations."
Teamsters Local 174 said Friday's picket "was peaceful, legal and lawful," and that were were "no arrests, incidents, or any violations of state or federal law."
