WASHINGTON Fifty-two years ago Friday, planet warriors celebrated the first Earth Day, bringing about a sea change in how Americans defined air pollution from the smell of prosperity to an existential health crisis.
Today, the existential crisis is climate change. The theme of Earth Day 2022 is Invest In Our Planet, according to the nonprofit EarthDay.org, which grew out of the first Earth Day observance on April 22, 1970.
Several Earth Day events sponsored by the organization will be held around the country. In Washington, for example, Seattle University will be hosting its annual "Earth Talks" meeting over Zoom starting at 11. In Woodinville, volunteers will gather at 21 Acres, spending a day in service to the soil. Meanwhile, Bainbridge Island Metro Parks has a variety of special events planned for the day.
Earth Day isnt just a day for activists and big rallies, though. Its also a day for individual action that contributes toward the groups ambitious goal of reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by mid-century and lowering the worlds temperature by 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit.
