Seattle Public Schools proposal for staggered start times met with confusion by parents

SEATTLE - John Loyd remembers the issues at the start of the school year.

-snip-

Loyd, who lives in West Seattle, has kids in middle school and saw the effects of the bus driver shortages first hand.

He says things have improved recently but a new Seattle Public Schools proposal would cause major shifting for his family.

-snip-

On its website, it says in part, "After evaluating options, we determined that SPS cannot provide safe, reliable, on-time transportation services to all eligible students using a two-tier bell time schedule. A three-tier schedule is the recommended solution to ensure the challenges from this year do not continue in future school years.”

More drivers, less need for staggered times.

I was called upon to be a driver for some kids who, for example, are on the autistic spectrum.

I drove smaller busses with a wheelchair lift.

Sometimes there was an attendant.

In the large busses, a chaperone is important as the driver is often new to the route, the students, the traffic and special circumstances of each school AND the radio procedures of the bus company.

I remember one time that a driver didn’t appear. By coincidence, i was nearby and saved the moment. It helped that I knew most of the teachers and students.
