Possible funnel cloud spotted in Spokane as unseasonably stormy weather grips state

A rare funnel cloud was seen Friday evening in Spokane, the result of a low pressure system that brought very stormy weather to Eastern Washington and off-and-on rain to the Seattle area for much of the day.

The National Weather Service said on social media that the Spokane area could see pea sized hail, lightning and heavy rain from isolated storms that were moving through the region. As of late Friday, the agency had not confirmed reports that a tornado had touched down although there were scattered reports of downed trees in the area.

KOMO News meteorologist Shannon O'Donnell said it is possible that a tornado could have formed in the area as strong storms moved through the region.

"We get two to three tornadoes a year in Western Washington," she said. "So they have got to hit somewhere."
