Some Seattle area parents plan to skip meals to ensure children eat this summer

Highlighting the struggle with food insecurity, Northwest Harvest's Christina Wong said summertime is anything but fun for children living with hunger.

“We hear a lot of awful stories of parents who are skipping meals so their kids can eat first," said Wong, the director of public policy and advocacy for Northwest Harvest. "Or [they] may be taking on extra jobs when they're already working more than 40 hours a week in order to be able to afford that food.”

Wong said one in three households with children in Washington state is experiencing hunger.

“It's not [summer] vacation for families that are experiencing hunger," Wong said.
