Ruling overturning Roe v. Wade sparks protests in western Washington

After the Supreme Court justices issued their ruling in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, overturning Roe v. Wade by a 6-3 vote, it was immediately met with celebration and anger for many in western Washington.

The ruling, which will bring sweeping implications, transform lives and reshape politics in the United States, has prompted many to hit the streets in protest.

While Washington, Oregon and California have already announced commitments to defend access to reproductive health care, many have already organized demonstrations in the Puget Sound region in support of abortion rights.

Protests were scheduled at the Federal Building and Westlake Park in downtown Seattle.

Protesters take to the streets in Seattle and elsewhere after historic abortion ruling

Thousands of people took to the streets in Seattle Friday after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, sending shockwaves throughout the country in a decision expected to jolt the mid-term elections in November.

There were two separate large demonstrations in Seattle -- one that began at Westlake Park and another at the downtown federal building at 2nd Avenue and Marion Street -- that ended as one large rally that wound its way through downtown city streets.

While most people were peaceful, there were some isolated instances of violence and property damage. Seattle police said they arrested two people in two separate assaults. Additionally, two businesses were damaged along 2nd Ave. but no one was arrested in those cases.

The Supreme Court on Friday stripped away women’s constitutional protections for abortion, a fundamental and deeply personal change for Americans' lives after nearly a half-century under Roe v. Wade. The court’s overturning of the landmark court ruling is likely to lead to abortion bans in roughly half the states.
