COVID vaccine developed at UW Medicine wins approval to be used in South Korea
SEATTLE A COVID vaccine developed at UW Medicine just won approval to be manufactured and distributed in South Korea. It's called SKYCovione, and it just cleared the final hurdle for approval in South Korea.
"Tremendously excited," said co-creator Dr. Neil King of UW's Institute for Protein Design. "It's been a long journey. Science tends to be a long game. It takes awhile to develop things, and many scientists are in that long game because they just want to help."
The vaccine took 30 months to develop, which is quick in terms of vaccine development. But the "long game" King mentioned refers to the years of work that were already underway before the COVID pandemic.

SKYCovione is easier to transport and store than messenger RNA vaccines, which require cold storage. That makes this new vaccine a better choice for reaching other countries without their own production facilities.
