Neighbors create guerrilla garden after Seattle sweeps homeless camp
What was once a troubling homeless camp has been transformed into a community greenspace on N 96th St, just off Aurora Ave. Neighbors call it guerrilla gardening and it’s a new approach to keeping encampments cleared from coming back.
The tidy garden occupies the grassy area between the street and the sidewalk, which the city refers to as the planting strip. The garden is now a labor of love but it’s rooted in public safety concerns.
“We didn't set out to do this garden project. I think we were all just pretty desperate to keep the neighborhood safe,” said Liza Javier, one of about two dozen homeowners involved in the effort.
Just a few weeks ago a trash-strewn homeless camp filled these same planting strips. As the camp grew in size so did the problems until a deadly shooting in mid-July convinced city officials to sweep it.

I remember getting a parking ticket back in the day for parking on the planting strip in Seattle. Guess they're laxer now.
