Washington AG accuses Meta of trying to gut state campaign finance law
Washington state is accusing Meta Platforms Inc. (Nasdaq: META) of trying to gut transparency requirements in the state's campaign finance law.
Meta argued in a July 15 motion filed in King County Superior Court that parts of the law, specifically regarding campaign advertising disclosure, were unconstitutional and shut off "entire channels of core political speech."
The motion is in response to a lawsuit that state Attorney General Bob Ferguson filed in April 2020, when he accused the company formerly known as Facebook of continuing to host political ads in Washington after it had promised to stop following a previous settled lawsuit.
The Silicon Valley-based tech giant is asking the court for a summary judgment — a decision from the judge in its favor without going to trial. A Sept. 2 hearing is set over Meta's motion.
