Search continues: 1 dead, 9 missing in Whidbey Island seaplane crash
FREELAND The search was ongoing Monday morning for nine missing passengers after a propeller-driven seaplane crashed in Mutiny Bay, west of Whidbey Island, on Sunday afternoon. One passenger was found dead.
Marine and air crews from local and national agencies responded around 3 p.m. Sunday to reports of a plane crash near Freeland, authorities said.
Some witnesses reported seeing a plane going down, others only saw the splash, and many heard the boom on impact, said South Whidbey Fire spokesperson Jon Gabelein.
The plane, a de Havilland Canada DHC-3 Otter, was traveling from Friday Harbor to Renton Municipal Airport, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
