Teachers from Seattle Public Schools overwhelmingly vote to authorize strike

SEATTLE — Teachers in the state's largest school district overwhelmingly voted to authorize a strike beginning Wednesday, which would have been the first day of the academic year for Seattle Public Schools.

Negotiations will continue and Seattle Public Schools says classes will be delayed until further notice.

Issues include pay, staffing ratios for special education and multilingual students, and student mental health support.

Seattle Public Schools asked teachers to accept a memorandum of understanding, agreeing to start teaching on schedule, without a contract, while the two sides continue negotiating, to reach a deal. Teachers rejected that idea.
