Nurses at UW Medicine land big raises with new contract

More than 2,400 nurses at UW Medical Center's Northwest and Montlake campuses are now the latest in the Puget Sound region to negotiate big raises ahead of schedule.

The Washington State Nurses Association reached a tentative agreement Sept. 30 with UW Medicine for a new contract that includes 21% raises over the next two years and 23% pay increases for nurses early in their careers, in addition to other concessions on standby and training pay.

The deal comes nine months before the union's current contract is set to expire. It continues a trend of speedy and preemptive bargaining sessions, as hospitals try to recruit and retain staff amid the nationwide nursing shortage, which is pulling more traditional workers into lucrative travel positions.

Representatives from the hospital did not respond to immediate requests for comment.
