Biannual workshop held in King County for women interested in pursuing firefighting, EMS careers

More than 30 women interested in joining the EMS and firefighting workforce participated in a workshop in Federal Way on Saturday and Sunday.

The event was hosted by South King Fire and Rescue as the King County Fire Chiefs Association and King County Emergency Medical Services are working to recruit more women to join the workforce.

“There’s some women that don’t know if they want to be a medic or a firefighter. They come here, and they can kind of dip their toes in it, see if it’s for them, see if it’s not,” said Marika Muesegades, a firefighter with Puget Sound Fire. “I know when I did this, I came here and was like, ‘I want this.’”

Workshop participants spent the weekend learning CPR and firefighting tasks, watching various demonstrations and participating in hands-on training.
