Vice President Kamala Harris will soon speak inside Lumen Field, kicking off a Wednesday itinerary in Seattle.
Nearly 400 school districts spanning all 50 states and Washington, D.C., along with several tribes and U.S. territories, are receiving roughly $1 billion in grants to purchase about 2,500 clean school buses under a new federal program, the Associated Press reported.
The Biden administration is making the grants available as part of a wider effort to accelerate the transition to zero-emission vehicles and reduce air pollution near schools and communities.
Harris and Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Michael Regan are set to announce the grant awards at 10:20 a.m. on Wednesday at Lumen Field. The new, mostly electric school buses will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, save money and better protect childrens health, the White House said.

(108,071 posts)A bus isn't a car. They haul a lot more people.
The average price of a new car is $47,000 so $400,000 for a bus is not as unreasonable as it sounds.

(57,516 posts)I live in a tiny town in Northern California and my kids school district is considering purchasing a school bus. They want to buy used, but I figure, whats the harm in buying something new that will last longer? How much does a new bus cost, anyway?

Buying a school bus is a great ideaespecially in smaller towns where residents tend to have longer commutes to school.
A new full-sized diesel school bus costs around $200,000-$220,000. Youll pay less for a smaller bus.
But with rising diesel prices and climate concerns, some school districts are starting to invest in electric school buses which range from $300,000-$400,000 but come with a hefty tax break (upwards of $100,000). Plus, you can save hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in fuel costs when you opt for electric.
Depending on your districts budget, you might be better off getting a used school busbut were glad to help you compare the numbers!
