Rivers rapidly rising in east King County with potential for significant flooding
The next punch of wet weather, delivering an atmospheric river, after soaking rains on Thursday, is forcing the second opening of the King County Flood Warning Center this week.
Emergency officials now closely monitoring the rivers and streams throughout the county, particularly in east King County, where Snoqualmie Rivers three forks flow is rapidly rising. The three forks flow measured 12,140 cubic feet per second (CFS) before noon, but by 12:15, it had increased to 22,760 CFS. That pushed it from an earlier Phase 2 Flood Alert to Phase 3, which has a threshold of 20,000 CFS.
A trio of duck hunters, coming off the Snoqualmie just before noon, said that they are watching the water level very carefully. Ryan Ellsworth said they use a pocketknife to mark the water level in their duck blind, every hour, to know how fast its rising. He said it rose 2 to 3 feet in the few hours he and his buddies were out hunting Friday morning.
King County said the forecasts call for the Snoqualmie River to rise much higher later on Friday, perhaps even beyond Phase 4. That threshold is 38,000 CFS, which would mean significant flooding across the Snoqualmie Valley.
